Tissue Array Technology

Tissue array technology was first described in the literature by J. Kononen et al. in 1998 (Nature Medicine Vol 4. No. 7, 1998 pp. 844-847). Using a pair of needle punch devices, the authors transferred tissue cores of interest from multiple conventional paraffin blocks to a single recipient paraffin block. Tissue array 'chips' were subsequently made by microtome-sectioning of the recipient block (see the following pictures). Pantomics's tissue arrays are produced using a similar technology with great care on the donor tissue collection and processing.
1. Organizing conventional paraffin tissue blocks for arraying.
2. Marking the area of interest and transferring the area to the recipient block using an arrayer.
3. Microtome sectioning to make tissue array sections
4. Tissue array technology makes it possible to analyze protein, RNA and DNA on dozens to hundreds pathology samples simultaneously. The technology also has great potential in bio-medical teaching and training.
